According to the World Economic Forum, women make up only 22% of the AI workforce globally.
In the US, only 26% of computing jobs are held by women, according to the National Center for Women & Information Technology.
The number of women studying computer science has decreased since the 1980s. In 2019, women made up only 19% of computer science graduates in the US, down from 37% in the 1980s, according to Code.org.
Women who do work in tech often face a gender pay gap. In the US, women in computer and mathematical occupations earn 81 cents for every dollar earned by men in the same occupation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Despite these challenges, studies show that diverse teams are more innovative and successful. Companies with more women on their executive teams are more profitable, according to a study by McKinsey & Company.
