Could you please introduce yourself?
Hi! My name is Maayan. I am a Software Engineer with 7 years of a professional experience. I worked with different companies, mostly startups/small companies as a full stack engineer and mentoring junior engineers. Today I work as a Software Engineer in Aptos where we build a layer 1 blockchain.
I have always felt the lack of women representation in tech and I am very excited to join GirlCode as an Ambassador to help in closing the gender gap.
I am currently based in SF and enjoy traveling, eating good food and spending time with my friends.
Whats your background?
My journey with "Computers" started when I was a teenager and used to troubleshoot my home network and follow the IT person whenever they came to fix issues. Some years after I decided to make my passion into a professional career and started a Web Development Certificate Program. I learned basic web programming (html, css, js, php) and short after graduated I started my first professional job as a front end engineer. I worked with different companies, mostly startups/small companies as a full stack engineer and mentoring junior engineers .
6 months ago I wanted to make a change in my career path and started to explore the web3 space and I managed to land a job as a Software Engineer in a Blockchain company as part of the ecosystem team.
Whats your current role?
Software engineer as part of the ecosystem team in Aptos - a Layer 1 blockchain. I work on dapps (decentralized apps) and SDK/tools.

Why have you decided to learn to code?
Do you think its important to learn to code?
I think it is one of the top tools and skills someone can get for themselves. Technology is the heart and center for most of western world countries, and by joining this industry and taking part in the heart of the tech industry you can create an impact on the world and create the change you wish to have on lives.
Do you feel the tech industry is male dominated? How can we encourage more women into the industry?
Throughout my career I couldn't help but notice the lack of women representation, especially in the engineer roles, and how it made me feel in some work spaces and work discussions. The first time I got to work with another women engineer was when I was involved in the hiring process.
I think we should have more women visibility and so young girls can "see" and know they can "be".
Did you struggle being a woman in the tech industry yourself?
In some work discussions and friendly small talks I could feel and see how I am "different" than the others in the room.
Whats the most rewarding and most challenging parts of your tech career so far?
I think my whole career path is the number one thing I am proud of. I started my career with a 8 month certificate program in web development and was able to work in different places, doing different roles without a BSc in a space that is very much Academic knowledge oriented. I am a self-taught engineer and got to this point with my own ambitious and motivation.
