Could you please introduce yourself?
Hi,
I'm Sofia and I'm a frontend developer based in Stockholm, Sweden. I'm originally from sunny Portugal and also lived in London, UK before moving here.
I love the ocean, music and VR gaming! If you don't find me coding or giving belly rubs to Poppy (my cat) I'm probably playing VR, my favourite games are Beat Saber, Until You Fall and Walkabout minigolf
Whats your background?
I have a background in Nursing, I worked as a nurse in different areas like operating theatres, recovery and ended up specialising in neonatal nursing. In total I worked 12 years as a nurse before becoming a software developer :)
Whats your current role?
Currently I work as a frontend developer in a e-health focused IT consultancy

Why have you decided to learn to code?
It was an old spark, I’ve always been interested and curious about programming, since I started writing command lines on MS-DOS to load my favourite games when I was about 5 years old, I then played with HTML and CSS in high school which I thought was super fun but when it came down to choose what to pursue in university the love for healthcare, understanding the human body and helping people spoke louder.
I then finished my Nursing degree but always kept doing code challenges over the course of the years. My husband is a software developer so he also inspired me to continue coding.
The big turnover for me was when in 2015, whilst working in a major neonatal ICU in London I found myself still writing nursing notes on paper and that was when I realised that maybe I could help through software development, so that kept on the back of my mind and 5 years later I decided to actually switch careers and join a software development program. I now work as a frontend developer within the e-healthcare industry developing apps that will help patients/healthcare professionals and being able to use my clinical experience in my new career feels awesome 🙂
Do you think its important to learn to code?
Absolutely and the way tech is moving forward I think it will be more and more important to have at least a rough understanding of the tech that surround us.
Do you feel the tech industry is male dominated? How can we encourage more women into the industry?
Yes, I still feel that is a very much male-dominated industry but I also feel it's changing!
That's why I think that communities like this and we coming forward to talk about our experiences and career paths maybe can inspire and encourage other women and young girls to start a career in tech, representation is so important!
Did you struggle being a woman in the tech industry yourself?
Not so much, but I've had that feeling of "not belonging" in some contexts
Whats the most rewarding and most challenging parts of your tech career so far?
The most rewarding has been being able to work in e-health and use my clinical experience to give another perspective when developing a product within healthcare. The most challenging has been trying to learn the vastness of different tech that there is, I wish my brain was a sponge to absorb everything! :p
